Fourth person dies from new coronavirus – WHO in crisis meeting

The new coronavirus has been confirmed to infect humans. Over 200 cases have so far been confirmed where four have died. Now the World Health Organization calls for a crisis meeting. The lung virus was discovered on New Year's Eve in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The virus has been linked to people who have visited a food market with fresh produce.

Coronaviruses are not just one but a large number of viruses, the majority of which are found in various animal species. It is known that a few of these coronaviruses, such as the SARS and MERS variants, also infect animals and humans.

Coronavirus belongs to the corona family, which causes common colds but also includes sars and mers.

China’s counterpart to the Public Health Agency confirms that the virus is transmitting between people, reports the AFP news agency quoting Chinese CCTV. On Tuesday, a local health authority also confirmed that a fourth person had died.

A total of more than 200 laboratory-confirmed cases have been discovered.

Most are in the Wuhan area, but some have carried the virus to Thailand, Japan, and South Korea. A man in Australia who is suspected of being infected has been quarantined.

The World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for a crisis meeting on Wednesday. The purpose is to investigate whether the new coronavirus is a cause of international health emergency and what recommendations should be recommended to deal with the outbreak, the director-general wrote on Twitter.

Based on the information currently available, the World Health Organization does not recommend travel or trade.

However, the organization urges countries to strengthen their preparedness for crisis situations.

The news agency TT has compiled questions about the virus to the Public Health Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell. They respond that the new coronavirus has not yet shown the same ability to spread as mers. It also seems to be only fatal for people with already ill health.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that securing people’s lives was “a top priority” and that the spread would “definitely be restricted,” reports AFP.

He also stressed the importance of international cooperation and informing the public on time.

Another thing is that the Chinese New Year and the so-called Spring Party are just a few days away. It is a time when families gather to celebrate, and the holiday has been called the world’s largest annual migration, with hundreds of millions of people traveling to their homes.
